Biography (translated from Wikipedia)

Born in Mons on May 1st, 1928, near Charleville-Mézières, he had a hard-working childhood after obtaining his school certificate and was saved from a purulent pleurisy at the age of four. He was exoded during the war and has been working since the age of 14, doing different jobs: butchery with his father, bicycle tire repair, building handler, factory riveting. At the age of 25, he comes to Paris and works in restaurants and car manufacturing to earn a living. From an artist temperament, in the 1970s, he took acting lessons to become a comedian and met the actor Daniel Russo, then a young student. He plays in a few films, including Jean Richard, who plays Maigret for a series on television. While he has been a chef in his own restaurants for the last ten years, he decides, at the age of 45, to enroll in the drawing evening classes of the City of Paris, in Montparnasse. For 5 years, he learned conscientiously from the living model and plaster. He took a few painting classes and began to make his own paintings, which he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and at the Salon des Artistes français. In 1987, he decided to open his studio-gallery, where he is still installed and that makes him a personalities of the Butte. Its location in the lower Montmartre, inclined to specialize in the painting of Montmartre, although his subjects also extend to flowers, the views of Paris, New York, the landscapes of Provence, or the interiors of cafés.

The museum of Montmartre exhibits several of his works, which are very present in the auctions, while the Moulin Rouge, who considers him the last great painter of Montmartre, publishes a lithograph of his composition.

He is one of the greatest painters of the "School of Montmartre" . Several retrospectives of his work have taken place

Joseph William Dawley (American 1936 - 2008).

Oil on board portrait of an old man, signed LR "Dawley", size 9" x 11" + giltwood frame.
This biography from the Archives of AskART:
“A graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, Joseph Dawley became well-known in the 1960s and 70s for his realistic character studies and landscapes. In 1975, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and his style became much looser, more colorful, and impressionistic.

The following, submitted March 2005 from the daughter of the artist:
Although raised and educated in Texas, Joe Dawley moved to New Jersey in the early 1960's where he remained. He painted in the traditional Old Masters style until 1982, when the symptoms of Parkinson's - diagnosed in 1975 - necessitated brain surgery. One of his accolades during that period was being commissioned to paint the official portrait of Mother Seton for the canonization in 1976.
After the surgery and much recovery time, he found he had lost his fine motor skills needed to paint realism as he had. He taught himself impressionism and was very successful at it. He has appeared on all three major networks - ABC, NBC, and CBS - and was featured in "Life" magazine in June 1993. Today, after about 30 years of deterioration from the Parkinson's, Joe Dawley continues to paint in yet another style, much more abstract and definitely from the heart. He may not always be able to speak, remember names, or even walk, but he seems to always be able to paint.
Dawley was invited by the White House to paint a painting for use as the official 1994 Christmas Card. Two paintings were created for this purpose and are both currently in the White House. Also in Washington, D.C., Joe's painting "Snowfall in the Park" is the 1995 Christmas Card for Very Special Arts, which is an international educational affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts."

"The career of Jean De Botton began among such School of Paris painters as Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and Duffy. His early designs won him many official commissions for murals that remain today in many French public buildings. His ability to make quick, realistic and elegant portraits gained him the unusual honor to be appointed the official painter of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937."

Robert Watson

Robert Watson (American 1923 - 2004)
Oil on canvas  40" x 30" + original frame signed and dated LL "R. Watson 72".
Biography by Vincent Price
“Robert Watson (1923 - 2004) was born in Martinez, California in a big house overlooking the bay, and with him was born the subject of all his paintings - the loneliness of man in the mysterious world. California provided this subject with a stage of vast space on which to grow and evolve.
It wasn't until after High School, odd jobs, a sojourn in the Army and study at Universities of California and Wisconsin that Watson's lonely man, mysterious world became concrete through reality of paint on canvas. This occurred between 1943 and 1947 when he went to New York and later spent eight weeks studying with Frederic Taubes in Wisconsin. Watson's career, a highly successful one, began with his first one-man show in 1947 at Gump's and in 1950 in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, both in San Francisco.
