Late 19th
Century Ottoman Empire Seal \ Scribes \ Inkwell Box, Damascus,
Syria. From the period of Sultan Abd Alhamid II "Abdul Hamid
II" (1876 - 1909).
Brass with silver and copper inlay in Arabesque motif and Arabic
scripts in Cartouches on the top and 4 sides with the Quranic verse
reading:
"
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
إِنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ وَإِنْ يَخْذُلْكُمْ
فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَنْصُرُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ
صدق اللَّهُ العظيم
"
and the Star &
Crescent on the outside. The inside is divided into sections
or wells, a large one, a smaller one and 2 inkwells, Large
Cartouche on the inside of the cover inscribed:
"السلطان الملك عبد الحميد
المجيد الثاني"
" Alsultan
Almalek Abd Alhamid Almajeed Althany" ending with the symbol of the
Ottoman Empire (Star & Crescent).
Measurements: W: 12" x D: 5" x H: 4"
(30cm x 12cm x 10cm).
The box is of exceptional quality of craftsmanship and is in excellent
original condition.
